Incomplete Vein Closure
To treat varicose veins, the affected veins with damaged valves and reflux must be completely sealed.
If even a small gap remains when sealing the affected veins, reflux can continue, and varicose vein symptoms may persist.
Even if the affected veins are fully sealed, leaving the root of the vein untreated can place stress on the connected branch veins and small veins, potentially causing new varicose veins to develop. -
Unaddressed Perforating Veins
When varicose veins develop in the saphenous veins, it is necessary to treat the perforating veins as well to prevent side effects. Perforating veins connect the deep veins and the saphenous veins, carrying blood from the saphenous veins to the deep veins. Under normal conditions, blood flows from the saphenous veins into the deep veins through the perforating veins. However, if the valves in the saphenous and perforating veins are damaged, blood flow becomes impaired.
If treatment is performed only on the saphenous veins without fully addressing the perforating veins, reflux in the perforating veins can create new reflux pathways, leading to additional varicose veins. It may also reopen previously treated veins, causing recurrence. -
Sural Nerve Injury
The sural nerve is responsible for sensory perception in the lower posterior part of the lower leg (between the knee and the ankle) and the skin around the ankle. It is most commonly damaged during vein stripping procedures, where the affected veins are surgically removed. Occasionally, it can also be injured during laser or radiofrequency procedures if treatment is extended excessively toward the ankle. To treat varicose veins without causing sural nerve injury, it is important to employ careful surgical techniques and accurately define the treatment area during the procedure.
Causes of Varicose Vein Treatment Side Effects
The main cause of side effects is incomplete or insufficient treatment. For symptoms to improve and the condition to be fully cured, proper treatment must be carried out first.
If treatment is not performed correctly, it becomes difficult not only to relieve symptoms but also to achieve a complete cure, and side effects may occur.
The same applies to varicose vein treatment side effects.
The main cause of these side effects is insufficient or incomplete treatment.
